Bait Rigs - The Best Way to Rig Live Bait When Fishing

By Trevor Kugler

When it comes to the term 'bait rigs' there are some crazy choices on the market today, especially when it comes to freshwater fishing. Saltwater fishermen use some rigs that are necessary, but for freshwater fishermen the same types of bait rigs simply don't apply. In this article I will explore the best way to rig live bait when fishing.

The important thing to remember here is what Henry David Thoreau said when he said," Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler." In my experience the simpler your bait rigs the more effective they are.

When fishing with live bait the goal is to have your bait appear as natural as possible. This means using small hooks and light line. Your hooks and line should be matched to the size and species of fish that you're fishing for, but the point is that your hooks and fishing line should be as light as possible. This rule not only refers to the bait rigs themselves, but also the line spooled on you fishing reel.

If your hooks and fishing line are too heavy, they will be visible to the fish, thus making your offering look less life like. The less lifelike the bait that you're using appears to the fish, the less likely the fish are to bite. By using light line and small hooks, we make our bait appear as lifelike as possible.

As I said earlier the simplest bait rigs are often the most effective, which is where gang hooks come into play. Gang hooks are probably the most effective of the bait rigs available to fisherman. Are they simple? They sure are, but these bait rigs are also extremely effective.

Gang hooks are a great way to rig all kinds of live bait for fishing, but are especially effective for live worm fishing. Gang hooks allow a live worm to be presented in an outstretched and natural manner. After all, a worm should look like a worm and not some sort of 'worm ball' right? Well, gang hooks make a live worm look like a worm, which makes a big difference to the fish.

Consider the information in this article the next time that you're thinking about live bait rigs. In fishing, just like in life, most of the time the simplest alternative is the most effective. Gang hooks are certainly simple and they are also very effective.
